There’s something rotten in the state of Ubuntu

On or slightly before April 2nd (which is after the beta for Feisty and almost 2 months after the feature freeze for Feisty), Ubuntu updated the SATA and IDE drivers in the kernel to the new experimental libata drivers. For users who had switched their fstab back to mounting by /dev from mounting UUID, this completely broke things, which was annoying, but OK. April 12th, the day of the scheduled Release Candidate, many people’s computers stopped booting because of libata breakage, and as of right now, over 2 days and 3 kernel builds later, some still are having boot issues. This late switch is unacceptable and should have been left until Gutsy Gibbon. If I were still on Edgy, I’d stay away from Feisty for as long as possible, as I predict future breakage of this magnitude.

Windows 2000 and Windows ME both suck?

Why don’t any of your laptops run Windows ME or 2000?

To make a long story short - because they’re inferior operating systems. Microsoft released Windows ME prematurely and as a result, the operating system had tons and tons of problems and bugs. To combat this, Microsoft then released a revised version of ME that it called Windows 2000. Windows 2000 is the same operating system as ME, just fixed up a bit. Honestly though, they both just suck. The system itself is unstable and unreliable - which is why Microsoft worked around the clock to produce Windows XP so quickly afterward (2001). We choose not to install Windows ME or 2000 because of these problems.

After all the crap they’ve been through with power, now there’s this? Well, hopefully it’ll only be a few hours. However, with their datacenter’s history of power issues, this could easily be days.

Fun with unix permissions

This morning I had inadvertantly chmod -R 711′ed my ~, causing a 403 forbidden error for about 9 hours. Whoops

Setting up a new domain name for fun (and profit!)

Last night, I managed to acquire the last good domain name still available binaryhermit.org. Once binaryhermit.org manages to fully propagate and resolves correctly and stops occasionally throwing bad_httpd_conf errors, I intend to start migrating there. However, since there are links out there that point to ameyer17.com, I intend to keep that domain active for the foreseeable future.

Scum-sucking, bottom-feeding assholes

Today, I went to the mailbox to check the mail, and there was something in it from Domain Registry of America (I refuse to publicize these assholes, so if you care to look at their website, I suggest that you use your favorite search engine to look it up). I opened it, and there was a notice that sent me a notification of the “domain name registration that is about to expire” and that “Your registration for: ameyer17.com will expire on May 22, 2007″ and “You must renew your domain name to retain exclusive rights to it on the Web”.
All this misleading language is an attempt by these assholes to FUD me into transferring my domain to them and renew it for $30 for 1 year, $50 for 2 years, or $95 for 5 years. I refuse to deal with these assholes and I suggest that nobody else does business with them
This blog post sums up my feelings.

A fresh start, again

OK, I nuked my blog again and I’m starting from scratch, again. Hopefully, this time it’s for good.
